Bruno Munari

"There must be No art detached from life: beautiful things to look at and bad things to use. "

Bruno Munari was born in Milan on October 24, 1907 and was an Italian artist, designer and writer. He was one of the greatest protagonists of art, design and graphics of the twentieth century, giving fundamental contributions in different fields of visual and non-visual expression with a multi-faceted research on the theme of movement, light and the development of creativity and Of fantasy in childhood through the game. Munari spent his childhood and adolescence at Badia Polesine. In 1925 he returned to Milan and in 1927 he participated in the Futurist movement with Marinetti, exhibiting in various exhibitions. In 1929 Munari opened a study of graphic and publicity, of decoration, photography and productions together with Riccardo Castagnedi. A year later he created the first "useless machines", abstract works inspired by childhood memories. From 1939 to 1945 he worked as a graphic designer at Mondadori, beginning at the same time writing books for children. Munari has devoted particular attention to the world of children. Without ever dividing the size of the content from those of form and material, he designed books, books-objects and games-to-think. In 1948 he founded the MAC (concrete art movement) with Gillo Dorfles, Gianni Monnet and Atanasio Soldati.
Munari has visited Japan several times, admiring its attention to the quality and care of the details; The influence of the "Zen" spirit and the quasi-philosophical attention towards the extreme synthicity of the object is found in much of its production of designers. Bruno Munari has received 3 Compasso d'oro awards. He died in Milan on September 29, 1998.
