Powerful Insights

Son of the famous sculptor Giacomo, Pio Manzù completed his classical school studies and then moved to the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, with the aim of specializing in industrial design, under the guidance of the Argentine designer and philosopher Tomás Maldonado. After graduating, in 1964, he made a series of projects for furnishing objects and began collaborating with various international publications, producing articles and drawings for the dominant theme of automotive design. At the same time he continued to attend the ULM school as an assistant. In 1965, with Fritz Bob Busch and Michael Conrad, Manzù gave birth to the project group Autonova whose theories and achievements, based on a design strongly related to the scientific knowledge of materials and industrial processes, were immediately noted By the engineer Dante Giacosa of FIAT and by the executives of various German and Italian automotive industries, such as NSU, Glas, Pirelli, Recaro, VDO e BASF.Other achievements that bear the signature of the designer Lombardo were in the field of furnishing items. We recall the Cronotime desk clock for Ritz Italora (later Alessi), the desk holder for Kartell and the brackets lamp for Flos, conceived together with Achille Castiglioni in the 1969.La cooperation with the Fiat style centre brought To the execution of a concept car for the use of taxis, made in 1968: The City taxi, a kind of utilitarian multi-space ante Litteram, which did not enter into production but provided the base on which, a few years later, was developed supermini heir to the historic 500 , the 126. The test of debut convinced Giacosa to entrust, in the same year, the stylistic study of 127, a new car destined to revolutionize the concept of "popular car" and become the reference model for world production in the years 1970. Pio Manzù never saw his project realized: in fact, while he went to the presentation of the final maquette to the Turin leadership, in May of 1969 was victim of a car accident.
