Richard Sapper

Technical innovation and pure design

Richard Sapper was born in Munich on May 30, 1932 and was a German designer, active almost exclusively in Italy.
He graduated in economics from the University of Monaco. He is considered one of the most important designers of his generation and his creations express a combination of technical innovation and purity of form. He studied philosophy, graphics, engineering and political economics. Between 1956 and 1958 he worked in the Mercedes Benz Project office. In Milan he initially worked with Gio Ponti, later for La Rinascente. Together with Marco Zanuso he designs radios and televisions for Brionvega, the cricket phone for Siemens, furniture, lamps and more. Between 1970 and 1976 he is a consultant to Fiat and Pirelli for automobiles and accessories and later for IBM. From 1986 he teaches at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. In 2009 he received the German Design Council's career award and in 2012 the president of the German Federal Republic handed him the Cross of Merit. He received 11 times the Golden Compass. He died in Milan on December 31, 2015.
